Despite the upheaval down town Bucerias plaza and beach – This event is ON!   This is the highlight of the week long Bucerias fiesta and is an event not to be missed.  Crowds start gathering mid morning when you can see the local riders on horseback  in their traditional costumes, the ladies beautiful dresses spread out over the horses’ backs.  Local dancers, in Mayan type costumes will perform in the grounds of the Church at 11.00.

The fishing boats come from La Cruz and arrive at noon.  THEY WILL ARRIVE AT THE BEACH NEAR TO DUGAREL’S RESTAURANT,  4 blocks NW of the plaza.  They are decorated with palm leaves, paper flowers and flags.  The boats (“pangas”) take it in turns to head at full speed on to the beach, to the applause of the crowd.  The passengers representing the different  commercial organisations gladly disembark.    If the waves are high, when the pangas turn around and head back out  there are moments when it seems they might flip over, and when they don’t everybody applauds.  The procession will go up Guerrero, turn right on Ave Mexico to the Church carrying fresh caught fish, fruit, bread, even tequila, all to receive a blessing, accompanied by the colourfully dressed Mayan dancers.

The fiesta will close tonight with more live music and fireworks at 10 pm. (ish).

Hola. Last year I was in Bucerias for January and there was a festival that was held around the time of the blessing of the boats – it ran for several days and I loved the festivities in the central square. What days does the festival run this January?
    Gracias. Kathryn

This is THE Bucerias town fiesta, it always starts on 16 January and ends on the 24th, the highlight being the blessing of the fleet. It also includes side shows and a funfair. We do not know what is going to happen just yet as half the plaza and the malecon have been torn up as part of an improvement project. Yes, height of tourist season! (Details on the front page) As soon as we have an update it will be posted.
