Although apparently El Grito did not occur until the early hours on the 16th, celebrations start on the evening of 15 September all over Mexico in the plazas of all towns and cities, with the El Grito call at 11 pm. It commemorates the cry of independence by Father Miguel Midalgo y Costilla in 1810, to revolt against the Spanish rule. In Bucerias plaza you can expect music and dancing from about 9pm, with coronation of the Queen at 10 pm, (there are Queens for every occasion), speeches, and at 11 pm the three fold cry of “Viva Mexico!” flag waving and the national anthem. Stirring stuff!
