We will be cleaning up the beach – and the arroyo – this Saturday 11 April, starting at 9 am on the beach in front of the downtown plaza. We are hoping for a record turn out of helpers – after all the Easter visitors we are going to need as many people as possible! Please bring supermarket plastic bags to fill, we will put them in black sacks for collection, keeping plastic bottles and drink cans separate for recycling. A second effort will start at 6 pm on the beach in Los Picos.
So the beach will be all clean in time for the 15th annual Oyster Fest, on Sunday 12 April. This event is unique to Bucerias, and will happen on the beach at the bottom of Morelos, that’s the last street on Lazaro Cardenas before the Kissing Bridge, locally known as El Punto beach. Starting time approximately 1pm, thousands of oysters, hundreds of kilos of ceviche and the fixings are all free for as long as they last, sponsored by the organizing committee headed by founder David Elizondo and the fishing cooperatives. It’s their thank you to the divers, to the ocean and to the visitors, and marks the final day of oyster gathering for the season. The oyster beds are then left alone until December. The diver who finds the biggest oyster wins a statuette and a cash prize, and there will be a “Queen” elected by public applause. This event gets bigger every time – this year organisers anticipate approximately 3,000 people attending.
