Yes indeed, we started our monthly Amigos beach clean ups on 09 November 2013, and here we are, one year on, still doing it! The participants may have changed but the purpose has not – keeping the beach clean for the benefit of the community – and the environment. Thank you Diana from Shalananda Yoga for getting us all motivated!
Yesterday we had additional help in the form of the beach sweeping machine. Our Southbound group has yet to meet up with the Northbound one, led by Ana Lilia Chavez Cruz since June this year. That shows the amount of trash we are picking up – especially at the street run-offs. But yesterday we did meet – although this was with another volunteer group: Dolphin Discovery!! And we had the added bonus of seeing dolphins gracefully surfacing and giving us a little wave of encouragement!
During high season, we are now going to be cleaning every 2 weeks, continuing with the second Saturday of every month and then just adding on 2 weeks, in other words not always the last Saturday if it is a long month – like November. So the next clean will be November 22. You can always check the Events Calendar to be sure. However, in addition there is a MAJOR Sports Day planned for November 29, so all hands are welcome to get everything into shape before the volleyball and soccer competitions start!
Our evening pick up at Los Picos (meet on the beach by the Corita Sites hotel) led by another Diana of the Manta Cafe is also proving very popular. I suspect sundowners afterwards are quite an attraction!
You don’t have to wait for the scheduled dates, and you don’t have to be an Amigos member – you can of course, (of course!) pick up trash as you walk the beach. Just filling a supermarket plastic bag will help – and we all thank you for doing that!
Well done and thank you to everyone for coming along.
