See the forest AND the trees !

As we move through life, sometimes we can’t see the forest for the trees. Our crowded daily lives draw our attention to one “tree” at a time. As we approach our later years, we might focus on what, if anything, lies beyond the forest. That is, will we continue in another life? And what kind of difference will our life’s works and loves make to the trees and the forest?

growing old tips Feb 2015Some seniors live like there’s no tomorrow, and others live to worry about tomorrow. Whatever baggage we carry, we can make choices to empower ourselves to find unimpeded views, to rediscover in a new light what has become too familiar. Think of a favorite image, whether in person or in a painting or photo, of a beautiful scene. We can delight in the total image and thrill to the beauty of each element in the big picture.

This perspective can affect big-picture and long-range choices, as well as day-to-day and moment-to-moment ones. Will I devote my retirement years to community service, travel and poetry writing? Will I take my time enjoying each bite of my favorite soup tonight? Will I get my estate in order for the sake of my family? Will I walk over to the park or plaza and watch the sun lighting up and the children frolicking around my favorite public fountain?

In spite of my own fear of death, will I signal to a dear, recently widowed friend that she can share her pain with me? Will I take one small step today to improve one aspect of my health? Will I finally stop and visually treasure and smell some of the blossoms springing up outside my windows? Will I start looking for a spiritual adviser or a kindred spirit or group to share my hopes and apprehensions about life’s ultimate questions? Will I resurrect a favorite album and dance to its music?

Our hope for today is that each of us will not only ask such questions but also make at least one forest or tree choice that emphasizes the “growing” part of growing older.
